“The European Party of Ukraine appreciates the decision of the EU to approve the suspension mechanism without any delays. We express a hope that this decision will accelerate the introduction of a visa-free regime with Ukraine and it will become possible early next year”, – said the leader of the European Party of Ukraine Mykola Katerynchuk, commenting on the news of approval by the EU Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission the suspension mechanism that can be applied to all existing agreements on visa liberalization.
Recall, the European Party of Ukraine has been fighting for a visa-free regime between Ukraine and the EU for a long time. On 24 November, 2016 we conducted a peaceful action “To be free in the EU” outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kyiv, where our activists urged Ukrainian authorities and the leadership of the European Union to be more decisive in issues of visa liberalization for Ukraine. In addition, during the 37th Congress of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, held on 1-3 December, 2016 in Warsaw, the European Party of Ukraine continued to defend this position. As a result, the ALDE President Hans van Baalen assured the leader of the European Party of Ukraine Mykola Katerynchuk that Ukraine will receive a visa-free regime with the EU until the end of the year.
Approval of the suspension mechanism is the first evidence that this promise will be fulfilled. At the same time, the European Party of Ukraine will continue to actively work both within the country and internationally to make a visa-free regime with the EU actually work.
