Mykola Katerynchuk: The Munich conference is an attempt of European politicians to introduce the situation to the new US administration

“The Security Conference is an attempt of European politicians to introduce the situation to the new US administration, so that they understand the position of Europe on key issues, including the situation in Ukraine”, – said the leader of the European Party of Ukraine Mykola Katerynchuk, commenting on international security conference, that was held this weekend in Munich.

“First, the key point is that the United States confirmed the immutability of its position in relation to the situation in Ukraine. Second, the important step of this meeting is the fact that the President Petro Poroshenko for the first time publicly mentioned the Budapest Memorandum, thus reminding the signatories about their obligation to ensure the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Finally, in her speech, Angela Merkel said that the eastern borders of Europe start with Ukraine, which indicates that they  finally see a threat for themselves in the conflict in Donbass. But at the same time, she expressed hope for cooperation with Russia”, – said Mykola Katerynchuk.

“So it is clear that without a radicalization of the US positions the resolution of the situation in Ukraine is impossible. Neither Minsk, nor Normandy format does work. The only way out is to involve the United States and give our guarantees due to Budapest Memorandum an ultimatum: either they are attached to the return of our territories, or we start to develop our own tactical nuclear weapons at their expense. Only such decisive steps can help to end the war and to return territories to Ukraine”, – he added.
