The European Party of Ukraine joins the process of political modernization of the country. Together with other non-parliamentary parties and NGOs, we are in favor of uniting political parties into political alliances in the October 2020 local elections. But current legislation does not allow this.
We appeal to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to submit to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine as an urgent bill to amend the Electoral Code on the possibility of creating political alliances. Such a legislative initiative will be the impetus for the development of local self-government and the renewal of political elites, rather than the dubious norms for parties to cover 2/3 of the country in the elections offered by the “Servant of the People” today.
All these manipulations of the Electoral Code, proposed by the ruling party, are aimed at usurping power and jeopardize the constitutional right of everyone to vote and to be elected. And the democracy of the electoral process in general. The European Party of Ukraine, although not represented in parliament, has representatives at all levels of local government in many regions of Ukraine, who are elected from year to year not for party affiliation but for effective community work. Do not neglect the constitutional rights of Ukrainian citizens to elect people not on the basis of party affiliation, but on the basis of their work efficiency.
We want to believe that President Zelensky, as he assured us, really stands for the consolidation of society on democratic principles, for democratic election process, for the interests of the citizens of Ukraine, for the equal rights of all political forces. We want to believe that he is really the guarantor of the Constitution, who is interested in political dialogue with every citizen, every community and every patriotic force in Ukraine.
We are in a situation where there is very little time left to make changes to the legislation. That is why the European Party of Ukraine calls on the President to take urgent action – to submit to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, as an urgent, a bill on the possibility of creating political alliances in local elections to bring the country out of political crisis.
Local elections are a way to unite the country and attract thousands of new people to politics, to give millions a chance to nominate their representatives to power.
