Statement of the European Party of Ukraine on the detention of the Volunteer Battalion “Aydar” Commander

02/07/2016 12:57

Yesterday Pecherskiy District Court of Kyiv ordered the detention of the Commander of the Volunteer Battalion “Aydar” Valentin Lyholit. The judge considers it necessary to assign two months detention without a right to bail.

After personal communication with “Batya” we declare that such preventive measure may be applied to the suspect only for committing a felony. Instead, Valentin Lyholit is incriminated a falsified case based on the statements of separatists. And it all happens in spite of the fact that “Aydar” was one of the first battalions that defended Ukraine from Russian invaders from the very beginning of the war.

Given this, we believe that the suspect must be released from the courtroom immediately. In our opinion, any statements of the Prosecutor General on the possibility to release him on Monday after learning of the case are not acceptable. Valentin Lyholit must be released immediately.

In case of further detention of Valentin Lyholit or attempts to remove him from the courthouse to the jail, the European Party of Ukraine is going to urge pro-Ukrainian political forces to protest.

We consider that the arrest of the Volunteer Battalion “Aydar” Commander Valentin Lyholit is an attempt to destroy volunteer movement in the country, initiated by the current government. Thus, the high officials thank those, who gave them power.
