The European Party of Ukraine joins the signing of the Warning of non-parliamentary parties to change the rules of the October 2020 local elections.
The mono-coalition has prepared amendments to the Electoral Code, which are essentially an open and bold attempt to usurp and preserve power. It is preparing for the complete destruction of the democratic institution of the will of the people of Ukraine – elections – and plans to establish a one-party dictatorship throughout the country, following the example of Russia.
If amendments to the Electoral Code are adopted in contradiction of the Constitution of Ukraine and the European Charter of Local Self-Government, the dictatorship of one political force – the ruling one – is guaranteed in Ukraine.
Immediately after the Revolution of Dignity, the European Party of Ukraine, along with other democratic forces, fought for electoral reform. We stood in the streets, blocked the parliament, sought support from our European partners and demanded the adoption of civilized rules of the election without a corrupt majority election system and with open voter lists. After the change of government in 2019, the new Electoral Code, although not perfect, has finally become a reality.
But driven by fear of losing local elections, the ruling party plans to distort the single democratic mechanism of the will of the people of Ukraine and cross the red line. We will oppose the attempt to usurp power and call on parliamentarians to refrain from discriminatory amendments to the election law.
The European Party of Ukraine appeals to all “local” parties and offers any support in defending the right of everyone to be elected, including joint participation in local elections.
We demand the dissolution of the parliament as soon as it violates the Constitution and adopts these amendments to the Electoral Code.
We demand the President to veto the law if it is passed.
We will make efforts to appeal the changes in the Constitutional Court.
We are already focusing our efforts on informing our partners in Europe about the attempt to turn Ukraine into a dictatorial country.
We appeal to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to react to the activities of his political party and it`s attempts to destroy democracy in Ukraine, violate the Constitution, and distort the Electoral Code.
