Today, on December 7, Ukraine celebrates the Day of local government – a professional holiday of all the MPs and their assistants, who work in local councils. I want to express my congratulations to everyone to whom his holiday may concern and I wish all of you inspiration, success in work and prosperity for your communities.
For us, Ukrainians, the model of local government is close because it has its roots in ancient Slavic traditions. Since ancient times, this model has demonstrated freedom of the Ukrainian people, their desire to choose their representatives, to give them power and to control their actions.
Ukraine has a difficult path, and when we finally gained the independence, we returned to the local government. Since independence, it has constantly improved and transformed. Now we go through decentralization, councils have more powers and financial autonomy, communities are being unified.
This is intended to create the most favorable conditions for the development of the communities. That is why I call the MPs and local government to use this opportunity, not to be afraid of changes, but accept them. Because your communities rely on you and expect changes for the better.
