During peaceful protests at Independence Square in Kyiv the main investigation department of the Security Service of Ukraine opened criminal proceedings on the actions and calls aimed to capture the state power, and the facts that threaten public order.
In these cases the pre-trial investigations was conducted concerning the People’s Deputies of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov, Oleh Tyahnybok, Mykola Katerynchuk, Oleh Lyashko and the politician Yuriy Lutsenko.
In February 2014 the criminal proceedings were closed by the procedural prosecutor on the grounds of Article 1, 3, 4 and the paragraph 4 of Article 5 of the Law of Ukraine ” On elimination of negative impacts and prevention of prosecution and punishment for participation in the events that took place during peaceful assemblies.”
The mentioned decisions were canceled by Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine because of the lack of intent to commit a criminal offense.
On the same day the main investigation department of the Security Service of Ukraine closed the criminal proceedings against Oleksandr Turchynov, Oleh Tyahnybok, Mykola Katerynchuk, Oleh Lyashko and Yuriy Lutsenko because of the lack of components of criminal offense in their actions under the item 2 of Article 284 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
