On November 30, 2013 Congress of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) adopted a resolution on the situation in Ukraine. The draft resolution was proposed by the European Party of Ukraine, the first of the existing political forces in Ukraine, which on May 10, 2013 integrated into the European political power and became a full member of the ALDE (the current liberal centrist faction of the European Parliament). Here is the text of the resolution.
1. EU – Ukraine Association Agreement
2. Proposed by the European Party of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine
3. The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, convening in London, Great Britain, on 28 – 30 of November 2013:
4. Whereas:
5. Ukrainian people had demonstrated the will to join the European Union, recognized by majority of Ukrainians as an example of democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights at international level;
6. Ukrainian Parliament adopted legislative acts obligating government of Ukraine to take all measures necessary for full integration of Ukraine into political, economic, and legal environment of the European Union, with the aim of obtaining full membership in the European Union;
7. Noting that:
8. On 21 November, 2013, the government of Ukraine unilaterally adopted a decision to suspend the process leading to the signing of the EU – Ukraine Association Agreement and to renew an active dialogue with the Russian Federation and other countries of the Customs Union.
9. On November 22, 2013, tens of thousands of Ukrainians took to the streets of Kyiv calling on the President of Ukraine to insure the process of signing of Association Agreement with the European Union.
10. ELDR president Graham Watson and ALDE Group leader Guy Verhofstadt, among other European liberal leaders, on many occasions publicly supported the EU – Ukraine Association Agreement and made a lot of effort to support Ukrainian people in this regard.
11. The ALDE Party calls for:
12. European institutions to condemn use of force against peaceful demonstrators in Kyiv and other cities throughout Ukraine, and warn Ukrainian governing authorities of them being personally responsible for authorizing brutal attacks by police and violence that followed; to further stress that such blatant ignorance of people’s will to determine their own future is unacceptable in the European country and to demand fulfilment of previously taken obligations.
13. Commands the People of Ukraine for their will and courage, and supports peaceful initiatives of Ukrainians to defend their rights and freedoms.
