On May 15 in Brussels, a seminar organized by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, dedicated to define a role of Ukraine, which is at the crossroads between the liberal and democratic values and the authoritarian political tendencies, was held. Debates on this issue were extremely important especially in a view of the forthcoming Vilnius Eastern Partnership Summit in November 2013, where the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU is expected to be signed.
The seminar was organized in two panels: the first panel on “Discordant and liberal voices in Ukraine” and the second panel on “Ukrainian politics at a crossroads.”
“The same day, the European Commission decided to board the technical preparation for the eventual signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU on deep and comprehensive free trade at the Vilnius Eastern Partnership Summit in November. However, the signing will depend on Ukraine’s implementation of the identified criteria that will be evaluated over the next six months, “- said the leader of the European Party of Ukraine, People`s Deputy of Ukraine Mykola Katerynchuk in his speech at the seminar.
“It, in fact, gives us a 70 percent hope that the Association will be signed in Vilnius. The signal, sent to Ukrainian people, is very important because the euro skeptics say only one thing, “no one waits for us”, “no one needs us”. These statements are used by those who are campaigning for the Ukraine integration into the embrace of the Russian Federation. Even if the ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko is not released before the Vilnius summit, signing the Association Agreement will create additional tools for this, “- added the leader of the European Party of Ukraine.
