On October 2 another attempt to conduct the illegal meeting of Kyiv City Council, whose term of office expired on June 2 this year, will be made. In Kyiv there was actually a creeping usurpation of power, and its citizens lost their right to manage the city because of their inability to choose its legitimate authorities in constitutional terms.
This situation concerns not only Kyiv citizens, but also the European Union, which before the signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU have repeatedly reminded the Ukrainian authorities on the need of Kyiv elections. Creating a precedent with the transfer of the election in the capital, the government can simply do the same with the presidential elections, using controlled Constitutional Court.
Today not only the right of Kyiv citizens to choose their legitimate power is in danger, but democratic rights and freedoms of every citizen of Ukraine as well. Therefore, the opposition must act decisively as united front to restore local government in the capital. We have already achieved a repeat of parliamentary elections in 5 districts. We will force the authorities to appoint elections of Kyiv mayor and Kyiv City Council.
The city must be managed not by the intended “Donetsk supervisors” but by the legitimately elected mayor and deputies of Kyiv City Council.
