Statement of the European Party of Ukraine concerning the events on Victory Day on 9th May, 2017

The Victory Day over Nazism in the Second World War became for Ukraine this year not the best example to follow. Because of a weak organizational support of mass actions by the authorities, massive fights between supporters of different ideologies, excess of power by law enforcement agencies and arrests of activists happened. Instead of commemorating victims of the Second World War, Ukrainians are engaged in “debriefing” and clarifying the relations.

We appeal to senior management of the State to draw correct conclusions about yesterday’s events to prevent similar scenario in Ukraine in the future. We believe that those who want to honor the memory of loved ones, whose lives took the Second World War, must be protected from any attack on their lives and health. Law enforcement agencies should perform their functions in strict accordance with the current Constitution. The presence of the police should be the guarantor of security, not a threat signal.

We welcome the strong dismissals in Ministry of Internal Affairs because of the events in Dnipro. Perpetrators must be punished and take full responsibility for their actions or inaction.

In the future, we urge the police to flawlessly perform their activities in order to protect national security and public order and promptly stop attempts to split the society.
