Statement of the European Party of Ukraine on May 9 events in Lviv
May 9 this year for the whole Ukraine and part of the world community, will, unfortunately, remember not only the celebration of the victory over Nazi Germany, but opposition of supporters and opponents of this date that ended in bloodshed in Lviv.
On the eve of the Victory Day celebrations Lviv District Administrative Court passed a resolution that included the prohibition of holding meetings, rallies, marches, demonstrations or other gatherings, except those provided by the order of the local government on May 9. Instead, in Lviv, representatives of pro-Russian NGOs launched a flag of non-existent state. Over the uncertain position of law enforcement officers who were present, the action still took place, leading to gross violations of public order, clashes and wounded people.
The European Party of Ukraine requires immediate response to these events on the part of prosecutors. Adhering to the Constitution, the executive office that has control over the implementation of court decisions, was obliged to enforce the court decision. Any opinions on the legality of that decision in this situation are unacceptable.
These developments clearly indicate the close relationship of our country with the beginning of the presidential campaign in the neighboring Russian Federation. If such provocations taking place in Ukraine continue, we have all chances to become the new Chechnya.
We believe that a prerequisite for this provocation was absolutely irresponsible decision of pro-governmental parliamentary majority to use the red flag next to the state one in the events dedicated to celebrating May 9. Instead of solving flagrant problems of social character, crisis phenomena in the economy and concealing the true picture of the socio-economic situation in the country from the public, a pro-government coalition deliberately pushed people to the confrontation that ended in bloodshed.
The European Party of Ukraine considers such actions of power as irresponsible and requires prompt investigation of this incident and punish those responsible.
